during the pandemic, I taught myself to paint and one of my favorite paintings is this one of  muthoni wa kirima. muthoni wa kirima was the only woman to be awarded the title of field marshal during kenya’s mau mau uprising, a fearless strategist and leader in the fight against british colonial rule. her story, often underrepresented in mainstream history, symbolizes the crucial role of women in liberation movements across africa.

this original piece based on her iconic portrait captures not only her strength during the struggle for independence but also her quiet resilience after it. in the decades following independence, muthoni lived modestly, often advocating for fellow freedom fighters who were vilified by the post colonial government and not recognized for their sacrifices during the state of emergency. my favorite fact about muthoni is that she lived in the forest for years, during which time, her hair locd. when she emerged years later, she refused to cut her locs until kenya was truly free from corruption even post independence. she only cut her locs at age 92, right before her death. seeing her face in my home makes me proud of my own locs and lineage as a kenyan woman. her enduring legacy is one of dignity, perseverance, and the ongoing pursuit of justice for kenya’s unsung heroes.
